General Essay Writing Tips If you are contrasting, use a contrast transition etc. There are many correct ways to start a paragraph, but in standard English, it is typical to begin each paragraph with the topic sentence. A topic sentence tells the main idea of the paragraph. The rest of the paragraph will explain the topic sentence and give examples and reasons to back up that assertion.
